High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS)

High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) is a versatile thermoplastic polymer known for its improved impact resistance, enhanced toughness, and affordable cost. It is produced by adding polybutadiene rubber to the base polystyrene material, resulting in a material that is tougher and more durable than general-purpose polystyrene (GPPS). HIPS retains the clarity and ease of processing of polystyrene, but with the added benefit of better impact strength, making it ideal for applications that require both rigidity and resilience.

Key Specifications:

  • Density: 1.03 – 1.06 g/cm³

  • Tensile Strength: Moderate to high

  • Impact Strength: High, especially at low temperatures

  • Appearance: Can be transparent, though often opaque with a glossy or matte finish

  • Melting Point: Approximately 230°C

  • Packaging: Available in pellet or granule form for industrial use, or custom packaging for bulk deliveries.

Benefits:

  • Enhanced Impact Resistance: HIPS has significantly improved impact strength compared to general-purpose polystyrene, making it suitable for applications that require more durability and resistance to physical stress.

  • Cost-Effective: Like general-purpose polystyrene, HIPS is affordable, making it an excellent choice for manufacturers seeking a balance between performance and cost.

  • Excellent Processability: HIPS is easily molded, extruded, and injected, offering great versatility in manufacturing processes such as injection molding and vacuum forming.

  • Versatility in Applications: The combination of impact resistance, ease of processing, and affordability makes HIPS a go-to material in a wide range of industries.

  • Good Surface Finish: HIPS offers a smooth surface that can be easily painted, printed, or decorated, allowing for customization in consumer-facing products.

Applications:

  • Packaging – HIPS is widely used for blister packs, clamshell packaging, and consumer goods packaging where both impact resistance and clarity are required.

  • Consumer Electronics – HIPS is commonly used for TV casings, electronic housings, and appliances due to its strong impact resistance and ease of fabrication.

  • Signage and Displays – The high rigidity and smooth surface of HIPS make it ideal for point-of-sale displays, advertising materials, and signage that require durability and visual appeal.

  • Household Products – HIPS is used in a variety of household products like toys, kitchenware, and stationery, where durability is important, but the product also needs to be lightweight.

  • MedicalHIPS is used in applications such as medical trays, device housings, and packaging due to its cost-effectiveness, safety, and easy processing.

Logistics & Trade Terms:

  • Loading Ports: Persian Gulf, Southeast Asia, Europe

  • Delivery Options: CIF, FOB, or long-term supply contracts

  • Certifications: MSDS, COA, SGS inspection, and quality assurance

  • Flexible Volume Contracts: Available for both spot and bulk shipments

High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) offers superior toughness and impact resistance while retaining the processing ease and cost-efficiency of general-purpose polystyrene. Whether for consumer packaging, electronic housings, or durable consumer goods, HIPS provides an excellent balance of strength, rigidity, and affordability that meets the needs of various industries.
